Advocacy

Introduction to the IMHA project

Independent mental health advocacy (IMHA) provides a safeguard for patients who are subject to the Mental Health Act. The Advocacy team has been working with advocacy services, an expert reference group and other stakeholders to develop ideas on how IMHA should be provided, staffed, commissioned and delivered. During this work we have been collecting material for this website, pulling together themes and ideas to develop scenarios that capture the values and richness of advocacy practice. We will be adding to these pages and hope you find the material informative and useful.

Good practice

The good advocacy practice resource is designed for advocates working with detained patients. The resource will also be of interest to mental health professionals and workers, service users and families who want to know more about advocacy. The resource is not prescriptive - it is a source of good ideas and interesting practice which will be added to and consulted upon. The pages contain a mix of materials including, guidance, case examples, stories, policies and procedures, links to other relevant work and contacts.

Qualification

The AWARD project is an initiative funded by the Department of Health and Welsh Assembly government to develop a National Qualification in Advocacy for England and Wales. For more information, see the advocacy.csip.org.uk microsite

Commissioning

This section of the site focuses on guidance for commissioners of advocacy for detained patients.

We will be adding to the site regularly and hope you find the material informative and useful.
